Scaling and Root Planning

Scaling and Root Planing is one of the more conservative periodontal treatments and the first line of treatment for gingivitis and beginning periodontitis. Scaling and Root Planing is a procedure to remove the accumulation of calculus below the gum level. Calculus is mineralized plaque that has accumulated on the root surface below the gum tissue. Removal of calculus is important because it causes irritation and inflammation of the gums and separates the gum tissue from the tooth.

Scaling and Root Planing removes the calculus on the root surfaces allowing the gum tissues to heal and reattach. Dr. Huffman and our hygienist, Shannon Payne, are experts at providing Scaling and Root Planing with local anesthetic to maintain your comfort.

The gum tissue is examined at a follow-up appointment to make sure the Scaling and Root Planing achieved our goal of reducing inflammation, minimizing the pocket depths and improving the gingival health so it can be adequately maintained.
